A well attended meeting at the Bowls Club last Thursday saw Andrew Powell MP introduce David Gibson MP (and Shadow Minister for Sport) to presidents and representatives from Maleny’s sporting, service and performing arts organisations.
President of MDSRC Mike Norman succinctly described the limiting effect on sporting activities of the district’s facilities, and the issues facing the clubs and schools actively involved in the 18 sports played here, outlining the long running need for more fields and facilities. “
The Showgrounds has traditionally been the target area for anything which could not be accommodated by the schools. But the Showgrounds, along with the schools, are at full capacity, with very limited facilities that are not meeting the demand”.
Maleny Commerce secretary (and Range News manager) Samantha Glover said that Maleny Commerce was very supportive of the work done by MDSRC, recognising in particular that home games would benefit local businesses.
“Our prime goal is to increase the amount of people that come to Maleny,” she said.“ But Maleny has not been able to host many home games or carnivals due to a lack of appropriate facilities.”
Concluding with a request for funding on behalf of Maleny’s clubs should LNP gain power, Mr Gibson (who had wisely left his cheque book at home!) then spoke on our situation.
Commenting on the excellent turn out, and the obvious organisation and strength of Maleny’s sporting community, Mr Gibson noted that we are fortunate to have the Precinct coming online into the available mix to allow flexibility of movement.
He advised that as with all large projects, needs had to be prioritised and broken down into smaller ‘chunks’ for successful manageability, as Maleny would be competing for available sporting funds.
But there’s no doubt that the points were made and made well (with several attendees speaking on behalf of their respective organisations) and that Mr Gibson listened attentively.
A strong and positive connection has been made, and MDSRC sincerely thanks everyone who gave up their time to attend the meeting, as all helped to underline the clear point that unified organisations tend to have much more success in their endeavours.
